zooanthella

The tiny single-celled algae that live inside the tissues of the polyps that form the corals. They produce food and oxygen through photosynthesis and give color to the corals.

zooplankton

A community of aquatic microcrustaceans including rotifers, copepods, and cladocerans, and microorganisms including dinoflagellates and other protozoans that float freely in the water column of oceans, seas and lakes. Zooplankton are the tiny "animal" portion of the total plankton.

zooxanthellae
