Fr. Leonard Chiti was appointed as superior of the Jesuits in Southern Africa in 2021. He also serves as Chair of Arrupe Jesuit University Council, a Jesuit university in Harare, Zimbabwe. When he joined the first International Workshop for Healing Earth in 2012, he was the director of the Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection and the Coordinator of the Global Ignatian Advocacy Network and Coordinator of Civil Society Constitution Coalition, Lusaka, Zambia. Since that time, he has served as the superior of Jesuits in Malawi and Zambia, as well as a board member for the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund and the Industrial Development Corporation, a Zambian investment company.
He holds a master’s degree in development studies from the University of London (SOAS) and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and theology from the Arrupe College, Harare, Zimbabwe. His interests in ecology and environmental issues have led him to participate in COP 26 and 27 as a faith leader promoting Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate, Laudato Si’.
